Longest Night of the Year
the astrology of Capricorn season, new Sol Connections episode, and my latest hyperfixations
My dear family, friends, and readers,
Today is the Winter Solstice and the longest night of the year. Winter is a season of rest, regeneration, and dreaming. This month marks two years of Flower Moon. This newsletter has gone through many iterations and has become a creative outlet for me to connect with you and share what’s on my heart. I am so grateful you’re here.
My heart has been heavy with grief since I last wrote. On November 26th, my beloved Uncle unexpectedly passed away. Here one day, gone the next. My immediate family is a tight-knit unit composed of my mom, stepdad, two siblings, two grandparents, Uncle Brian, his wife Carol, and my husband. Brian’s death shocked us, and his absence created a void.
We held a beautiful memorial service for my uncle on December 9th, and it was the first time I’ve been involved with the affairs that take place after someone dies. Here is the obituary I helped write. Yesterday, my mom gave me a photo of Brian to add to my ancestor altar. I find comfort in knowing our relationship will continue after his death.
Sending my love to everyone struggling through grief, heartbreak, and loss this holiday season.
Astrology of Capricorn Season
Capricorn is the seagoat and builder of worlds. The seagoat has a fishtail and goat head. The fishtail represents Capricorn’s capacity to dream and vision. The goat represents Capricorn’s grit and determination to climb the highest mountains in the toughest terrains. I’m swaying between hibernation and holiday gatherings, so I haven’t crafted anything new. I’m honoring my body’s need for rest while I dream of next year’s garden. This month, I made a big investment in my herbal education and enrolled in the Herbal Academy’s Entrepreneur Herbalist Path. The course will take approximately two years to complete, and when I’m done, I’ll have the knowledge and resources to launch my herbal practice. I’m excited to study and develop vital skills to support my community in uncertain times.
My Latest Hyperfixations

🌱 I’m almost to my goal of reading 24 books in 2024. Science fiction and fantasy novels are helping me get there. My favorite books I’ve read this year are Some Desperate Glory and The Great Transition.
🌱
’s research project How Much Money Is Enough? I especially loved this interview with Della Duncan about everyday alternatives to capitalism.🌱 Sarah Wilson’s newsletter
and podcast Wild where she writes and interviews guests about collapse. Wading into these waters is activating and overwhelming. As Sarah says, understanding collapse is not for everyone. I’ve been swimming these depths for two years, and finding Sarah’s work has helped me reach radical acceptance. Be gentle with yourself if you feel called to engage with her work.In grief & rest, Emily
